The Problem
Australia is one of the world’s top producers of e-waste, ranking fifth globally with 21.7 kg of electronic waste generated per person each year. Our e-waste output is growing three times faster than our general waste output. Every year, 80% of the 4 million computers and 3 million televisions purchased in Australia end up in landfill, contributing to over 140,000 tonnes of electronic waste unnecessarily ending up in landfills.
The Opportunity
Used or broken electronics are rich in aluminium, copper, gold and palladium. If the device cannot be resold, extracting and recycling these materials consumes 90% less energy than mining raw ores. Furthermore, the recovery process costs roughly half as much as traditional virgin metal mining.
